De Parade

Alaaf! Stedelijk Museum Breda becomes Stedelijk Museum Kielegat!

De Parade

What does carnaval mean to you? And what does the future of this celebration look like? Together with photographer Vincen Beeckman and various organizations in Breda, we will explore this. We’ll examine the meaning of carnaval and similar celebrations through the eyes of people from different backgrounds.

Similar traditions and festivals are celebrated around the world, and these celebrations also take place in our own city. Themes such as identity, hierarchy, gender, and solidarity are central. During carnaval, the people are given the key to the city, we decide who we want to be, choose our own prince, and head into the streets to celebrate. But how do other cultures express these same themes? Together, we’ll dive into the diverse world of carnaval.

Carnaval 2026

You’re never truly alone when you’re part of something – and De Parade proves just that. In the coming months, we’re all working together towards a vibrant and colorful Carnival.

Highlights include:

  • An exhibition at ArtenZO from October 30 to November 26
  • An interim exhibition about togetherness in the museum’s Next space from January 12 to March 22
  • And a carnival performance during the Grote Optocht on February 16

A lot is happening behind the scenes. We’re sharing the highlights and developments on this digital bulletin board: From the studio.
